Zozobra
Fort Marcy Park is the setting for the burning of Zozobra, on Thursday, September 8th. The gates open at 2 pm; entertainment starts at 3 pm; and the burning begins at dusk. Parking is limited, and Park and Ride will be available from the local malls.

Local artist William Howard Shuster, Jr.–“Will” (1893–1969) conceived and created Zozobra in 1924 as the focus of a private fiesta at his home for artists and writers in the community. His inspiration for Zozobra came from the Holy Week celebrations of the Yaqui Indians of Mexico; an effigy of Judas, filled with firecrackers, was led around the village on a donkey and later burned. Shuster and E. Dana Johnson, a newspaper editor and friend of Shuster’s, came up with the name Zozobra, which was defined as “anguish, anxiety, gloom” or Spanish for “the gloomy one.”

A major highlight of the pageant is the fire spirit dancer, dressed in a flowing red costume, who appears at the top of the stage to drive away the white-sheeted “glooms” from the base of the giant Zozobra. The fire dance was created by Jacques Cartier, a former New York ballet dancer and local dance teacher, who performed the role for 37 years. His dance student, James Lilienthal took over the fire spirit role in 1970 and continued it for 32 years. Source: www.zozobra.com

Gay Pride - 2005
Pride on the Plaza invites you to be a participant in the 2005 gay pride parade on Saturday, June 25, 2005. The parade steps off at 12 noon on Old Santa Fe Trail for its three block route to the Plaza. Festivities will continue on the plaza until 4 PM.

The 2004 parade was such a great success that we are trying to move the line-up to a larger parking lot across the street from the Capitol. Please stay tuned for details. This year we hope to continue the trend to make the parade an entertaining, exciting, and colorful event that will draw participants and spectators from the entire Santa Fe community as well as from our out-of-town visitors . . .

Best Of Santa Fe - 2005 by The Santa Fe Reporter

Publisher's Note: Although SFR published its first Best of Santa Fe issue in 1991, it wasn't until 1996 that it became a regular addition to SFR's annual special issues list. Therefore 2005 marks the tenth consecutive year that SFR has published the Best of Santa Fe, which has now grown into the biggest and most popular issue of the year. The list of winners below is the result of online voting by SFR readers that took place between May 16 and June 12, 2005.
